The Briarwood Bugle

Week 5

July 17 through July 21

From Mike and Matt

It has been another amazing week at spectacularly awesome Briarwood Day Camp!  Waterpalooza was a hit(check out some of our online photos!) and so was Lower Camp Spirit Week (again—check out some of our online photos!).  Bring-A-Friend Days were a success, intercamp games were a lot of fun, the CITs had an awesome day at the beach, the Super CITs loved their 3 day adventure to Williamsburg and our “regular” camp stuff continued to amaze and astound!  We ended the week with Goofy Day today and, well, it certainly earned its name!

Next week is the Busy Bee Show—always a crowd pleaser featuring Briarwood’s cutest!  Carnival is next week, too.  Should be fun!  Have a great weekend!

The super cits Storm Williamsburg By Dan Feldgus

This week our Super CITs had their 3 day trip to Williamsburg, VA. Quite simply—it was awesome!  The trip down was easy and the first night was capped with a spectacular time driving the tracks at Go Kart Plus.

Day two started with a great breakfast and then we were off to Water Country USA. Wow! What a place! We raced on slides, got swept away on the Hubba-Hubba Highway, and got dropped into tubes on one of the greatest water slides in the country. But, that was just the beginning. Busch Gardens was next. If you haven’t been there, GO! It was spectacular! We rode incredible roller coasters and experienced  countries from around the globe. It was a tremendous day filled with screams, laughs and tons of fun!

On day three we got revolutionary. Literally. The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown was simply outstanding. Some experienced farming, others made linen, many were engulfed by a 4-D 180 degree movie experience, but all found it worthwhile—the air conditioning may have helped!

The ride back took some time but that only allowed for more bonding and singing. Nobody rocks the vans better than the Supers!

BOBCATS RULE AND OTHER TRUE STORIES BY ERICK FIORELLI

Week 5 was another fun filled week for the Bobcats! Eli, Brooks and Ian all represented their bunk at the club softball game vs Camp America. The game was a huge success with Briarwood getting a double digit victory. In hockey, Michael came in clutch by scoring the game winning goal. The Bobcats also had a wonderful time at the annual Waterpalooza event and especially enjoyed the giant inflatable obstacle courses. Max and Nick teamed up and had superstar performances for their league team, the Hillbillies, in basketball. Max scored double digit points, while Nick finessed his way to double digit assists. Later in the week the Bobcats hit the road to play Camp America in softball, coming back home with an impressive 6-2 victory. With many great events still to come, like Color War and the annual wiffle ball tournament, the Bobcats are looking forward to the rest of an already awesome summer!

The Orioles Song by Kim Kiefer

The Orioles flew into Lower Camp and are having a blast! Ariel is quite the adventurous one and can be found climbing to the top of the rock wall every week. Alyssa shows off her superstar skills playing soccer. Sierra shows us how it’s done when we play basketball. Dakota can be found scoring a hole in one during mini golf. Juliana loves to lead the girls out to sea in the paddle boats. Lily lights up when we go to nature where she can fish and make fun crafts. Joely loves to show off her new skills in the pool. Addison loves to make fun projects in ceramics. Elle always has a smile on her face, especially when we go to gymnastics. The girls love when we spend time with our Super CITs, Morgan and Rebecca. The Orioles have an amazing Junior Counselor, Danielle Lean who has been at Briarwood since she was a Busy Bee and is now getting ready for college. These girls have been soaking up the sun and cannot wait for their next week at Briarwood Day Camp.

MEET EVEN MORE OF OUR WONDERFULLY AMAZING STAFF!

GINNY MELTZER is celebrating her 11th summer at Briarwood. Ginny has two daughters that can also be found at camp having an awesome summer. During the off season Ginny is a recess and cafeteria aide at Sol Feinstone Elementary School. People would be surprised to know that Ginny spent all of her summers in high school and college working at Great Adventure in New Jersey.

LILY GOLDBERG started spending her summers at Briarwood Day camp 15 years ago! This year is her first year as a senior counselor to the Robins. Lily’s favorite thing about Briarwood is spending her days with her awesome bunk. Lily is a student at Penn State University, studying kinesiology.

DEVYN  SAX is senior counselor to the outstanding Gazelles. Devyn, her sister (Sorelle) and dad (Harris), have made Briarwood their summer home for 9 seasons. During the off season, Devyn is a student at Penn State University. According to Devyn, she can repeat the alphabet backwards!

SOME FRIENDLY BRIARWOOD REMINDERS

  • If you want to reach your camper’s counselor during the camp day, call the office at 215-598-7143 and we will gladly relay your message. Please do not TEXT or CALL your child’s counselor directly during the camp day.  Our counselors are busy watching children and we have asked them not to check their phones during the day.
  • Don’t forget about our Open Visitation Policy—Camp families are welcome to visit any camp day through the end of week 7 between 10:00 am and 2:30 pm.
  • Early and Late Care is available from 7:30 am—6:00 pm sharp. Please call the office if you will need this service.
  • While it never rains at Briarwood, in the event of a passing shower, please send your camper with the appropriate rain gear should the forecast call for rain.
  • Everyone should apply sunscreen daily prior to coming to camp.
  • We have a lost and found at camp. It gets pretty full this time of year.  Campers’ items should be marked or labeled before they come to camp.
  • Did you miss a Bugle? You can find all of this summer’s Bugles on the front page of our website.
