Summer Camp Is a Great Place To Try New Activities While Enjoying Old Favorites, Too

Mike Green

Owner / Director

Summer camp is great for kids. It’s a time for them to relax, run around, unplug and get out in the fresh air. Camp is also a fantastic time for kids to have new experiences and try new things.

At Briarwood Day Camp, we take pride the fact that in addition to “regular” camp activities like basketball, arts & crafts and swimming, kids also get to do things like archery, ceramics, fishing and rock wall. Why is that important? We’ll explain.

CAMP MAKES UNCOMMON ACTIVITIES ACCESSIBLE

Do you have a zip line in your backyard? Are you a certified archer? What’s your fishing experience? Do you have a kiln? Briarwood – and, of course, camps like Briarwood – provide children with the opportunity to try new things in a safe environment that won’t require a huge, new commitment. There’s no need to sign up for a specialized course, there’s no need to buy your own equipment, there’s no need to do a five hour deep dive on YouTube – your camper gets to go to camp and “test drive” these different, unique activities while also getting to enjoy lots of other outdoor activities, too.

CAMP LETS KIDS DISCOVER WHAT THEY REALLY ENJOY – AND IT MAY JUST BE ONE OF THESE OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH ACTIVITIES

All kids are different. Some kids love soccer. We play soccer. Some kids love painting. We paint. Plenty of our campers have lots of exposure to these kinds of activities during the school year.

We get special gratification, though, when kids discover a NEW thing they like – something they haven’t done before and never would have discovered without camp. We get calls from families: “My son is now bugging me to go to the climbing gym.” “Do you know where my daughter can get archery lessons in the fall?” “The whole family went fishing at Lake Nockamixon and it was great.”
We’re so happy when campers find a thing they love to do.

A “TRADITIONAL” CAMP TEACHES KIDS THAT THERE ARE LOTS OF DIFFERENT WAYS TO HAVE FUN

You bet we take life lessons from our camp activities! One of the benefits of camp is that each camper can find their own favorite activity and that the group learns to respect that. Some love “traditional” sports. Some love art. Some love drama and dance. Some love fishing (or archery or rock climbing or . . . ). At Briarwood, everyone gets to have fun. And with the help of our amazing staff, the campers learn to respect and appreciate the idea of “Different strokes for different folks.” There are lots of ways to have fun at camp!
