Welcome to Part II of our series! Summer camp is a place for fun. It’s a place to try new things. It’s a time to make memories. At Briarwood Day Camp, in addition to our “regular” fun, different and memorable activities that kids don’t usually get to do – like gaga, the adventure course and the fabulous jumper – every summer we have specially scheduled events and traditions that our campers love, enjoy and remember.
Carnival is a highlight of every Briarwood camper’s summer and our campers can’t wait until it starts! Once a year, we bring in things like inflatable slides, rides and games. Our campers smile, play, laugh and create memories. Our incredible staff runs the games, paints faces and coordinates the inflatables in the pool.
We serve hot dogs, water ice, cotton candy and pretzels (the kids get fruit at the end of the day as a snack).
Carnival is a day that Briarwood campers “count down” to each year!
The Lost and Found Fashion Show, along with Win Matt Frankel’s T-Shirt (see [Part III]), are two beloved Briarwood traditions that – as far as we know – don’t happen anywhere else.
Let’s explain the fashion show. Briarwood, like many camps, generates a lot of lost and found (it’s stored centrally in camp – by the Sports Center on Upper Field). Like many camps, our lost and found inevitably gets progressively fuller as the summer proceeds.
While we ask our bunks to check out the lost and found, we also realize that stopping by the Sports Center is sometimes inconvenient.
So what do we do? We bring the lost and found to the bunks! At Counselor of the Week (see [Part I]), sometimes we’ll enlist some of our staff or older campers to join us onstage and “model” Briarwood’s latest in towels, t-shirts, water bottles and more, moving through the aisles so that our campers and bunk counselors and see.
Items are claimed! People get reunited with their stuff! Everyone’s a winner! It’s hilarious. And successful. And memorable.
