Welcome to Part III of our series! Summer camp is a place for fun. It’s a place to try new things. It’s a time to make memories. At Briarwood Day Camp, in addition to our “regular” fun, different and memorable activities that kids don’t usually get to do – like gaga, the adventure course and the fabulous jumper – every summer we have specially scheduled events and traditions that our campers love, enjoy and remember.
We’ve got so many great special events at Briarwood that it’s too much for one article! So click on the links at the bottom to see even more.
Bunk shows are a beloved tradition at Briarwood Day Camp. Our bunk shows happen at different times during the summer – our Lower Camp (grades 1-3), Upper Camp (grades 4-7) and Senior Camp (grades 8-10) do their thing in Week 4. Our Busy Bees (3YO preschool, pre-K and K) perform in Week 6.
So what are bunk shows? Each bunk dances, struts, shakes, sings and/or goofs their way through a popular song of their choosing. Is it fun? Yes! Is it optional? Yes! Do even the grumpiest, least rhythmic campers end up choosing to show their stuff? Overwhelmingly, yes! And is it memorable? You bet it is!
A few years ago, Matt Frankel had a problem. He had lots of old Briarwood clothes at this house (he and Mike Green have owned Briarwood since 2009), he wasn’t wearing some of these clothes anymore and he wanted to give them a new, happy home. But how to distribute them? And would anyone want them? You bet!
We created a weekly contest – Win Matt Frankel’s T-Shirt. At Counselor of the Week (see Part I), we’ll ask a specific division a trivia question – “What are the camp colors?” “Briarwood holds the Guinness World Record for what? [Readers: here’s the answer – World’s Largest Game of Gaga]” “What kind of animal is Briarwood’s mascot Boomer?” Hands shoot up in the air. Whichever camper first answers the question correctly wins Matt Frankel’s T-Shirt. It’s a big deal! But we’re not done yet . . .
Sometimes, we’ll also draw a bunk’s name to come onstage with their counselors and sing the Briarwood Song. Once they do, all of the campers and staff win Matt Frankel’s T-Shirt, too.
No matter how many people earn their t-shirt that week, the last step is to [come on stage, face the camp, hold up the t-shirt] and proclaim in unison, “MY NAME IS [your name] AND I JUST WON MATT FRANKEL’S T-SHIRT!”
It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s memorable. Are all of the t-shirts and other Briarwood clothes and swag that we give away still only Matt’s? Not anymore. But the name has stuck and it remains a great and much anticipated camp activity! And kids love it!
